Buenas noches hermanas y hermanos,
It is unseasonably cold this evening, feeling more like autumn than spring. But most of the trees are in bloom and the dandelions have sprung up all over the landscape. And although I could see my breath in the air as I went for a walk, I nonetheless heard the sound of toads and frogs coming from Bear Creek.
As I was getting ready to head in, something caught my attention. The light filtering through the trees by the side of our ancient barn reminded me of light filtering in through stained glass windows. This little corner of Dunblane used to be a side horse paddock that was nothing but sand and crabgrass. Over the years mother nature has reclaimed this space, and it is now a little magical forest. And as I stood there, absolutely motionless , listening to the sound of the wind whistling through the tree branches, I realized that the Holy Spirit had once again led me to a thin place.
And as the sun dipped beneath the western horizon, it was reminiscent of turning out the lights in the sanctuary after a service. I felt a peace that passes all understanding.
And as I closed my eyes to pray for our little reflection group against the backdrop of God's outdoor cathedral, I thought about the first verse from the powerful hymn called "How Great Thou Art."
"Oh Lord, my God
When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed "
Sisters and brothers, take a moment this evening to step outside and embrace the beauty and splendour of God's creation. Look up into the night sky and stare into infinity, and beyond. You will be standing in sacred space.
Let us pray
But before we pray, it is important to remember that the ancient office of Compline derives its name from a Latin word meaning 'completion' ( completorium ). It is above all a service of quietness and reflection before rest at the end of the day. It is most effective when the ending is indeed an ending, without additions, conversation or noise.
Put down whatever you are doing and enter into a state of peace and reflection. Take several deep breaths. Let the stress of the day melt away. Feel the healing power of the Risen Christ. Open your hearts to the Holy Spirit.
O God, your unfailing providence
sustains the world in which we live
and the life we live. Watch over
those, both night and day,
who work while others sleep, and
grant that we may never
forget that our common life depends
upon each other's toil;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
May you have a peaceful evening and a restful sleep. And I will especially pray for those who have trouble sleeping because of worry and anxiety. May God send his angels to watch over you tonight.
Bendiciones infinitas
Paz
I love you
John
God bless and preserve our little reflection group.
